Excursion ODA1 - 6 Hours - £140pp
Hakone, part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, is a very popular destination among tourists, for its stunning scenery, views of Mount Fuji, the Ashi lakes and its many onsens.
Mount Fuji, located on Honshu Island, is the highest mountain in Japan at 3,776.24m, second-highest peak of an island in Asia, and 7th-highest peak of an island in the world. It is an active stratovolcano that last erupted in 1707–1708. Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometres south-west of Tokyo and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about five months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan and it is frequently depicted in art and photographs.
We will make a stop at Mount Fuji’s 5th Station, which lies about halfway up the mountain, for more incredible views. Here you can enjoy free time to wander the site’s souvenir store and its torii gates and shrines, which help commemorate the mountain’s symbolic role as a transition between heaven and earth.
Lunch will be served at a local restaurant along with a soft drink.
Next, we head to Lake Ashi, which lies in a crater formed by a massive volcanic eruption around 3,000 years ago. Here we will take a short 15-minute cruise of this postcard-perfect body of water, admiring views of Mount Fuji, Mount Komagatake and other peaks in the distance.
The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway (cable car) climbs Mount Komagatake from the Lake Ashi lakeside, from the top you can enjoy spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Please note that the ropeway can be cancelled at short notice due to strong winds in which case you will then travel on the funicular, toilets at the ropeway station are typical basic Japanese toilets.
